HELP & ADVICE

Oral hygiene

Children's teeth are under attack each time they have a snack or drink containing sugar in between meals. Sugar causes decay, especially when consumed frequently. eg. Eating all the sweets quickly is less harmful than making a packet of sweets last throughout the day.

Consuming a bar of chocolate complete therefore is less harmful than a packet of sweets lasting throughout the day.

Confine sugar-containing drinks, sweets and chocolate, to mealtimes. Cut down on between meal sugar intake. Enjoy these confectioneries by having them at an agreed time as a treat.

Store treats separately and encourage grandparents and other relatives to contribute to this store rather than handing out confectionery at random.

Avoid sugar containing foods and drinks for at least an hour before bed time. Have sugar free snacks and sweets instead. Check labels.

The damage from sugary snacks occurs quickly, so brushing afterwards may not offer protection.

Using some common sense, knowledge of the sugar content of food and drinks and advice from your dentist will help you to maintain strong healthy teeth.
